The goal of the Chicago Ave project is to turn a block into a community. The fear, distrust, and lack of respect for others are things that need to be overcome. To enable a community to develop skill sets that will no longer make them dependent on the government. The block has 39 vacant properties and two vacant shopping plazas. There were 41 serious crimes on the block in the past 6 months. The purpose of the Chicago Ave project is to kick off a bigger community building project designed to stabilize the neighborhood and block which in turn will bring in middle class investments and bring forth the idea of black gentrification. Within the Chicago Ave project there are various events and/or programs that take place to bring this community closer and this weekend we created a community garden for the neighborhood. In hope of creating natural sources of food and a peaceful place to come and relax.
